Always here in this space suggest some books, but with the event of the Book Fair of Porto Alegre has no way to stop a bit further into the rich history of this, which is one of the oldest in the country. Its first edition took place in 1955 and its founder was the journalist Say Marques, chief secretary of the Daily News. Inspired by a fair in Cinelandia visited in Rio de Janeiro, booksellers and publishers Marques convinced the city to attend the event. The goal was to popularize the book, moving the market and offering attractive discounts. At the time, libraries were considered elitist. Therefore, the motto of the founders of the first Book Fair was: If people do not come to the bookstore, the bookstore will bring to the people. The Customs House Square was a bustling place in Porto Alegre from 50 years and 400 000 inhabitants. And on November 16, 1955, was inaugurated on 1st Book Fair, with 14 wooden barracks installed around the monument to General Osorio. In the second edition of the event, began the autograph sessions. In the third, collections began to be sold by the system of installment credit. In 70 years, the Fair assumed the status of popular event, with the beginning of the cultural program. Since 1980, admitted the sale of used books. And in the 90s, won big backers, encouraged by national and state laws to encourage culture. The infrastructure has been expanded and modernized, the cultural events were consolidated and the Fair started getting big names in Brazilian and international publishing market. The biggest event of the literature, no doubt, in Porto Alegre between 30 October and 15 November, is the Book Fair. In 2009, in its 55th edition, was the writer Carlos Urbim patron.
The discounts are 20% on prices over the counter, which also remain in almost every bookstore in Porto Alegre, even after it ends.
